I was supposed to fly to Lukla on the 1st of Nov and head on a 2-day hike towards my art residency at Sagarmatha Next in Syangboche. That’s in the Khumbu region of Nepal, up in the Himalayan mountains, on the way to Everest Base Camp (EBC). Their bodies smeared a bit reddish. Have they hurt themselves or are they just dirty? But oof, the wretched smell.. Thousands of them pressed into tiny compartments. I wonder which flight they took. And then the somehow adorable, dead, curled up rat in the middle of a busy street, next to holy temples. The non-stop rain, unusual for this time of year, has delayed my flight for several days. I’m staying in the first 5* hotel in Nepal. With all the luxuries it’s nothing like the real streets of Kathmandu. Barely going out to preserve my energy. I’m very sheltered here. Or so I thought.. In the dead of night, I woke up to the sound of someone vomiting. A man really going at it in the room right next to mine. I couldn’t believe that I was “witnessing” it. How are the walls so thin in a 5* hotel to be able to hear that? I re-woke when the same guy behind my wall was snoring so loudly. A couple of decades ago he wanted to be the youngest person to mount Mount Everest. At 13-years old, he had to be rescued before reaching to the top, suffering from extreme frostbite. He had to recover in the hospital for 6 months. He then picked up motorcycle racing but crashed real bad with injuries that now permit him from going up to the mountains at all. He lives in Australia where he manages another Indian food restaurants. I graduated from sculpture studies (BA) in Pallas University of Applied Sciences in Tartu, Estonia in 2017. In 2022 I gratuated from Tallinn Univesity of Technology’s MSc studies in Technology of Wood, Plastics, and Textiles, concentrating my studies on plastic engingeering. My diploma thesis work based on finding a way how to recycle cigarette butt waste into reusable plastic material. These studies led me to establish the company Filaret, which is collecting and upcycling cigarette butts into 3D printing filament - turning the toxic waste into something useful again. My aim is to combine the learned scientific knowledge and my creativity to design impactful works of art and products, which have an underlying environmental and educational messages. (Copy) "Lähme nulli!" ..or "Let's go to zero!" is an environmental exhibition and educational program highlighting the problems around accumulated waste, mostly from packaging of every day items and over-consumption of clothing. Proposed solutions for home use are suggested next to every problem, giving a chance to the individual to do their part to reduce their footprint at home.
